We are very pleased to welcome our new team member David Frenzel.

David, let the readers know who you are and what made you join Living Mainframe.

I’ve been a tech enthusiast ever since I got my first programmable Casio calculator—almost 20 years ago. My technical journey has taken me from building websites and publishing an Android app to working on large, business-critical enterprise systems that power industries. Outside the world of tech, I love spending time bouldering at the climbing gym, sailing, or traveling.

I’ve known Marc since before Living Mainframe even existed, as we worked on a project together. I learned a lot from him during that time.

I’ve also known Andi for years, so when the opportunity to join Living Mainframe came up, I knew it would offer me the perfect next step in my professional journey.

Could you share what you did before joining Living Mainframe?

Eight years ago, I started as a dual student studying computer science at Deutsche Telekom and T-Systems International. That’s when I was introduced to the Mainframe and COBOL – and even learned how to program a robot! I went from not knowing what a Mainframe was to becoming a specialist with a broad understanding of the platform and detailed knowledge of application development.

During my time at T-Systems, I worked on projects that allowed me to apply and continuously improve my expertise. I helped customers optimize their Mainframe applications and navigate transitions to other platforms, ensuring they could get the most out of systems that had often been developed over decades.

What excites you the most about working with Living Mainframe?

Three things excite me the most:

    1. Helping customers solve real-world problems that have a significant impact on their businesses.
    2. Supporting new team members as they start exploring the Mainframe platform.
    3. Indulging my inner tech nerd by diving into the nitty-gritty details of technology.

I believe work should be enjoyable because it takes up such a big part of our lives. These three aspects of my job have already proven to be a lot of fun, and I’m excited to experience even more of that at Living Mainframe.

What are your long-term goals, and how does this position fit into them?

My professional journey has taught me that it’s almost impossible to predict what life will look like years down the road. However, I’ve learned that I can shape my work to focus on the things I enjoy.

One of my long-term goals is to continue improving my technical skills, knowing I’m building a foundation I’ll rely on throughout my career. This means embracing the ever-changing landscape of technology while sharpening the tools that enable my success. Living Mainframe offers me the opportunity to do just that while contributing to meaningful projects and growth.

Dear David, we’re delighted to welcome you to the Mainframe Team! Your expertise and dedication to mastering the mainframe are truly valued, and we look forward to working with you. Welcome aboard!
